Alligator Snapping Turtle

Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii):  This turtle is found in the southeastern United States and into the midwest.  This is the largest freshwater turtle in North America and possibly the world.  Animal Adventures currently houses Igor, believed to be the largest freshwater turtle in captivity.

American Alligator

The American Alligator is one of two species of true Alligators in the world.  American Alligators were one of the first animals placed on the endangered species list and have since made a huge recovery and are no longer listed.  Animal Adventures houses an average of 12 alligators of all sizes up to 8-9 feet in length.

Asian Water Monitor

Asian Water Monitor (Varanus salvator salvator):  The Water Monitor is a close relative of the Komodo Dragon and is the second heaviest lizard in the world reaching over 100 pounds and over 9 feet in length.  These are some of the most intelligent of the lizards and can become quite tame in captivity.  Animal Adventures currently house two Water Monitors: Rex, an 8 foot long giant, and Jekyll a 5 foot sweetheart who can safely interact with the public.

Basilisk

Basilisk (Basiliscus basiliscus):  The basilisk lives in the rainforests of South America and has earned the nickname "Jesus Christ lizard" from its ability to run across water to escape predators.

Binturong

Binturong (Arctictis binturong): The binturong is a close relative of civets and genets and lives in the rainforests of Southeast Asia.  Binturongs spend much of their lives in the canopy where they forage for fruits and are known to sleep on tree branches.  Binturongs are also responsible for planting many trees in the forest by passing seeds in their droppings.

Canadian Lynx

Canadian Lynx (Lynx canadensis): The Canadian lynx is a formidable hunter with incredible vision and the ability to hunt in temperatures down to 40 degrees below zero.  These cats reach upwards of 40 pounds and are capable of killing deer and caribou.

Fennec Fox

Fennec Fox (Vulpes zerda): The fennec fox is the smallest wild dog weighing in at a top weight of about 3 pounds.  These foxes live in deserts across northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula and spend the hot days in underground dens.

Green Tree Python

Green Tree Python (Morelia viridis):  The Green Tree Python is a non-venemous, arboreal (tree-dwelling) snake from New Guinea, Indonesia, and Australia.  Adults average 3-4 feet in length and this species is popular in captivity due to it's striking colors.

Striped Skunk

Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis): The striped skunk is a commonly encountered omnivore ranging over much of the North American continent.  Skunks reach about the size of a house cat, and are most famous for their well-developed scent glands.

Kinkajou

Kinkajou (Potos flavus): Kinkajous, or honey bears, is a rainforest mammal related to raccoons.  They reach the size of a housecat and have a prehensile tail which can be used as a fifth hand for climbing.

Mata Mata

Mata Mata (Chelus fimbriatus): The Mata Mata is native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America.  This turtle sports excellent camouflage, a very long neck, and fascinating eating habits.  Hoover, Animal Adventures' young Mata Mata, was named after the turtles' ability to rapidly suck large volumes of water into its mouth, capturing prey, much like a vacuum cleaner.

Nile Crocodile

Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus):  The Nile Crocodile is the secon largest crocodile species in the world, reaching lengths over 20' and breaking 2,000 lbs. in weight on occasion.  Nile Crocodiles range throughout much of Sub-Saharan Africa.  Recent studies show these animals are capable of biting with a pressure over 5,000 PSI, although a person can hold their mouth closed do the weak muscles used to open the mouth.

Plated Lizards

Plated Lizard (Gerrhosaurus flavigularis):  The Plated Lizard lives in grasslands and scrub deserts along the east coast of Africa.  These lizards are well protected with hard body plates, and head shields attached right to the skull.

Rabbits

Animal Adventures is home to a handful of deomestic rabbits.  The two pictured are our Rex Rabbits, Jet and Marshmallow, a breed which is prized for its soft, velvety fur.

Pyxi Frog

Pyxi Frog (Pyxicephalus):  This a genus of large frogs from Africa which spend most of the year burrowed under the ground, only emering during the rainy season to reprouce and eat (sometimes even each other).

Reticulated Python

Reticulated Python (Python reticulatus): With a maximum recorded length of 32' 9", the reticulated python is the longest species of snake in the world.  Our largest spcimen currently measures around 18' in length, making it a very impressive specimen to see.  This is a dangerous species, and the only snake reliably recorded to have hunted and killed a human for food in the wild.

Ring-Tailed Lemur

Ring-Tailed Lemur (Lemur catta):  This primate is the sole species in its genus and, as with all lemurs, is found only in Madagascar where they graze the forest and grasslands for leaves and fruit.  These lemurs are threatened in the wild by habitat destruction, but reproduce radily in captivity and are common in zoos.

Rococo Toad

Rococo Toad (Chaunus schneideri):  The rococo toad is a giant toad from South America.  This large toad features an extra set of posion glands on its hind legs.  The Cane Toad, which is the largest toad in the world, is often mistake for the Rococo Toad, and is also housed at animal Adventures.

Hedgehog

African Pygmy Hedgehog: The African Pygmy Hedgehog or Domestic Hedgehog is actually a hybrid of the Four-Toed Hedgehog and the Algerian Hedgehog.  Although they retain much of their wild behaviors, hedgehogs can make fantastic pets, but are illegal in several states.

Scarlet Macaw

Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao):  The scarlet Macaw is a large bird, reaching up to 3 ft. in length, and can fly at speeds as high as 35 mph thanks to their large, powerful wings.  These magnificent parrots range throughout Central and South America, adapting readily to variations in habitat.

Savannah Monitor

Savannah Monitor (Varanus exanthematicus):  This is a giant lizard species from Africa reaching and average of 3-4 feet in length, although some subspecies can reach 6 feet.  The Savannah Monitor is a docile species and is common in captivity despite their size.

Sugar Glider

Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps): The Sugar Glider is actually a small possum capable of gliding on skin flaps stretched between in its front and hind legs much like a Flying Squirrel.  Sugar Gliders reach around 7 inches in length, with their tail about equal in length to their body. 

Tarantula

Tarantula (Theraphosidae):  Tarantulas are large, hairy spiders found throughout much of the world.  All tarantulas come equipped with large fangs and venom, which they use to kill their prey.  Despite their giant size, however, tarantulas are no more dangerous to humans than bees.

Uromastyx

Uromastyx is a genus containing desert and hill dwelling lizards that range from Northern Africa to central Asia and India.  These lizards are mainly herbivores and bask in temperatures of 120 degrees.  Animal Adventures usually house a few different specials of these beautiful and friendly lizards.

Sloth

Sloth

The only traveling sloth in New England. Two-toed sloths spend most of their life hanging from trees, and are generally nocturnal animals. They are somewhat more active than three-toed sloths. Their body temperature depends at least partially on the ambient temperature; they cannot shiver to keep warm, as other mammals do, because of their unusually low metabolic rates and reduced musculature.
